The Arena, once measuring 83 meters by 48 meters (272 ft by 157 ft), was a wooden floor covered in sand. Within its confines, gladiators engaged in deadly combat, captivating both royalty and thousands of Roman citizens. Today, only a segment of the original arena floor remains, revealing the Hypogeum below.
The Colosseum Arena cannot be accessed with a standard Colosseum ticket. To explore the Arena, you must choose a guided Colosseum tour that offers access to this area.

The Colosseum's underground, known as the Hypogeum, was a complex network of tunnels and chambers that served as a holding space for gladiators and animals before their duels. The Hypogeum featured a sophisticated system of lifts and pulleys to transport them to the arena floor.
To visit the Underground visitors must opt for a guided tour that provides special access to the area. Entry to the Underground is not permitted without a guide.

Explore the Colosseum Museum
While the 3rd, 4th, and 5th tiers are considered part of the Colosseum Belvedere, the Belvedere is mostly used to refer to the 5th level as it means 'beautiful view'. From this uppermost level of the Colosseum, you will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Rome and the inside of the amphitheater from here. Historically, it was where the general public sat, farthest from the action but still part of the spectacle. The Belvedere was reopened to the public in 2017 after a long closure period for safety reasons.
Now, visitors can ascend to this level as part of a guided tour that specifically mentions access to the Belvedere.

- Sperone Valadier Entrance: Located facing the forums, this entrance (also known as the main entrance) is for individual guests with time-scheduled tickets, guided tour tickets, or audio and visual guides tickets. The average wait time is about 45 minutes.
- Group Gate: Found on the North side of the arena, this entrance is reserved for groups of 14 to 50 members with a professional tour guide. The average wait time is around 15 to 20 minutes.
- Stern Gate: Located opposite the main entrance, this gate is for groups, schools, or visitors with an accredited guide whose tickets include access to the Underground Colosseum, Colosseum Arena, and the Belvedere. However, this entrance is currently not in use and can be accessed from within the Colosseum.
