Colosseum Tickets & Tours 2021

A blood-thirsty crowd, an electric atmosphere, gladiators in a fight till death and a satisfied emperor -- all amidst a towering, iconic structure, the Colosseum.

Despite braving volcanic eruptions, lightning, earthquakes, vandalism and general neglect over the centuries, the Colosseum in Rome still stands as a landmark symbol of ancient Roman culture. Built sometime before 80 AD under the direction of Emperor Vespasian, the Colosseum was designed to be used as an amphitheatre for sporting events and entertainment.

Over 10 years of construction, travertine limestone and concrete were used to design and create the 80 iconic, arched entrances and columns; spectators from all social classes peered from these entrances to observe and engage in the bloody duels taking place on the arena floor of the Colosseum.

Today, nearly 2000 years later, the Colosseum is one of the most-visited monuments in the world. Around 7.6 million travelers visited this legendary monument in 2018. With your Colosseum tickets, tour the length and breadth of this historic landmark and take in a true Roman experience of the world’s largest amphitheatre. With your Colosseum tickets, you also get access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, historic landmarks where you will get an in-depth understanding of ancient Rome.

All Your Colosseum Ticket Options Explained

There are a variety of Colosseum tickets available: Skip-the-line tickets, guided tours, special access tickets, and combo tickets. Here, we provide a detailed explanation to give you a better understanding of the different Colosseum tickets available.

Colosseum skip the line tickets

Skip-the-line tickets

A standard Colosseum ticket provides skip-the-line access to the ancient landmark, allowing you to bypass long queues. With this ticket, you can access and explore major parts of the Colosseum. However, it excludes access to the special areas like the Underground, Belvedere (also known as the 4th and 5th floors). More importantly, with a standard Colosseum skip the line ticket, you also get default access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Depending on your ticket, you may get an audioguide or a guided tour to accompany you while you explore the Colosseum.

Colosseum tour

Guided Tours

The best way to understand ancient Roman history is by opting for a guided Colosseum tour. Your tour guide is fluent in English and will accompany you along the way with interesting trivia about the history and construction of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine hill. Your guided tour will vary depending on the ticket you opt for: some offer guided tours for just the Colosseum; others for the Colosseum, as well as the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. If you’re planning on visiting the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel, Colosseum tickets also offer guided tours to these popular attractions.

Colosseum arena

Special Access Tickets

A standard Colosseum skip-the-line ticket provides access to basic parts of the structure. If you wish to truly explore all parts of the Colosseum open to the public, you can opt for tickets that provide additional access to special sections like the Underground, Arena and Belvedere.

The Underground, also known as the Hypogeum is located under the entire structure, known as the place where gladiators would wait for their turn to fight; the Colosseum Arena -- most of which is in ruins -- was the space where all the sporting events and entertainment took place; the Belvedere, which includes the 4th and 5th floors of the Colosseum, would offer a bird’s eye view of the arena to spectators.

Colosseum Tour

Combo Tickets

While a standard Colosseum ticket gives you default access to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, you can opt for combo offer tickets that allow you to enter and explore popular attractions like the Vatican Museums. These tickets might be more expensive than one that provides access only to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill; however, they provide skip-the-line access and guided tours to some of the most-visited destinations in Rome like the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica and Sistine Chapel. These day-long tours are the best option if you have limited time in the city and would like to visit all popular attractions.

Beyond the Colosseum

Colosseum tickets Roman Forum

Roman Forum

Located right in the heart of the city, the Roman Forum was once a bustling marketplace during the 7th Century BC. It is famous for once being home to the state treasury, being the cremation ground of Julius Ceaser and the rumored tomb of Romulus, founder of Rome. The Roman Forum was dotted with basilicas, temples and public spaces. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Forum fell to ruins and was plundered and excavated vigorously over the centuries. Today, after various preservation efforts, the Roman Forum is open to visitors. Some interesting points to explore include Temple of Saturn, House of the Vestal Virgins, Temple Antoninus and Faustina, Temple of Vesta.

Colosseum tickets Palatine Hill

Palatine Hill

The beautiful Palatine Hill is often dwarfed in front of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, but is by no means any less a significant symbol of Roman history. It is believed that back in 10 Century BC, the first Romans settled on the hill, which later became home to famous emperors like Tiberius and Augustus. The Palatine Hills offers some of the best panoramic views of Roman culture and heritage from the top: the Circus Maximum stadium an Aventine Hill on one side, and the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Capitol Hill at the other. Palatine Hill generally experiences less footfall and is more airier than other parts of an always crowded city.
